What Is a Dog Heat Cycle?

A dog’s heat cycle, also known as the estrous cycle, is the period when a female dog can become pregnant. This cycle is a natural part of her reproductive system and typically happens about twice a year, although this can vary by breed and size.

Key Phases of the Dog Heat Cycle

The heat cycle has four main stages, each with unique characteristics:

Proestrus

  • Duration: 7-10 days
  • Signs: Swelling of the vulva, light bleeding, and increased attention from male dogs (though she isn’t ready to mate yet).
  • Hormone Activity: Estrogen levels rise, preparing her body for potential mating.

Estrus

  • Duration: 5-10 days
  • Signs: Reduced bleeding, softer vulva, and readiness to mate; behavior changes may include flirtatious or receptive actions toward males.
  • Fertility Window: This is the phase when she is most fertile, and mating can lead to pregnancy.

Diestrus

  • Duration: 60-90 days (if she isn’t pregnant)
  • Signs: Swelling reduces, and her interest in males declines. If she is pregnant, this is when the pregnancy develops.
  • Hormone Activity: Progesterone remains high, which supports pregnancy if she has mated.

Anestrus

  • Duration: 4-5 months
  • Signs: Resting phase with no visible signs of heat or mating behavior.
  • Body Condition: This phase gives her body time to recover and prepare for the next cycle

Cycle Length by Dog Size

The average heat cycle length can vary by dog size:

  • Small Dogs: Every 4-6 months
  • Medium Dogs: Every 6-7 months
  • Large Dogs: Every 8-10 months

This calculator uses these averages to estimate the likely date of the next cycle. Remember, each dog is unique, and these are estimates based on typical cycle durations.
